What is Nephrology
Nephrology is the medical specialty that studies the anatomy of the kidneys and their functions. Has as a field in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney and their consequences, which in summary is:
-HYPERTENSION and vascular damage
-Hematuria (blood in urine), proteinuria (protein in the urine)
-Infections of urine
-Diseases that produce stones in the kidney
-Diseases that produce inflammation in the kidney (Nephritis)
-Diseases of other organs, immunity, and treatments that affect the kidneys
-Treatment of the consequences of impaired renal function: anemia, lack of bicarbonate, increased phosphorus
-Follow-up of Chronic Renal Failure in query (ACKD)
-Dialysis treatment: Hemodialysis and peritoneal Dialysis
-Attention pre -, immediate and post-renal Transplantation
-Nutrition of the renal Failure in all its phases
-Renal biopsy for the diagnosis of kidney diseases
-Construction of accesses in the veins to perform hemodialysis (catheters)
-Special techniques of blood purification: plasma exchange, granuloaféresis, leucocitaféresis, LDL apheresis etc
It is a specialty that covers a broad field of medicine and requires to a Nephrologist, a broad-based training, and robust not only in what is proper to their specialty, but also of those specialties with which it is closely related to: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Digestive, and Urology etc on the other hand, the HTA is part of the day-to-day Nephrologist, occupying an important part of your health care activities daily, so that the Units of high Blood pressure are located in the Nephrology Services.
Nephrology is a specialty that is perfectly differentiated from the Urology that it is a specialty surgical and that covers all the surgical aspects of the kidney and male genital. We can say, that there are only 2 diseases that may have overlapping as are the infections of urine, in which the Urology would correspond more to act when the solution is surgical, and the field of stones, in which to Urology we would all treat with lithotripsy and surgical, leaving the study of the causes in the field of Nephrology.
The Nephrology department at Hospital San Pedro
We can say, that as a result of the implementation of the Programme of Kidney Transplantation in April 2011, the Nephrology of the Hospital of San Pedro is currently involved in all of the fields that are specific to your specialty. In addition, it is the Nephrology of reference of all the Autonomous Community, with care 24 hours a day.
It is organized in different health CARE AREAS:
-Area hospital: care to patients admitted
In charge of Nephrology (5ºD) kidney disease or HYPERTENSION
Area of Kidney Transplantation: with specific rooms for the post-operative period of kidney transplants.
To charge other specialties and in need of attention on the part of Nephrology.
-Area outpatient: care provided on an outpatient basis
GENERAL NEPHROLOGY outpatient clinic: patients referred to assess renal alterations
UNIT OF HYPERTENSION AND VASCULAR RISK: patients sent due to poor control of BP, suspicion of secondary AHT, realization of MAP (Ambulatory Monitoring of Blood Pressure or Holter bp), and ABI (Ankle-brachial Index), assessment of global vascular risk.
CONSULTATION OF SYSTEMIC DISEASES AND AUTOIMMUNE disorders: patients with systemic diseases (Lupus, Vasculitis, Sarcoidosis, etc) that affect the kidney or Nephritis, a close control of the special treatments.
ADVANCED CHRONIC DISEASE clinic (CKD): patients with advanced renal failure, for a narrow and oriented to slow down the evolution and to prepare for future dialysis if necessary. Is complemented by a Consultation Nurse who performs work education and provides appropriate documentation for the training of the patients.
QUERY WAITING LIST AND RENAL TRANSPLANTATION: evaluation of patients to be included on the waiting list for transplantation, and periodic monitoring of patients already transplanted.
-Area dialysis: outpatient and admitted
PERITONEAL DIALYSIS: attends, teaches and consults of patients on this dialysis technique.
HEMODIALYSIS: attends and dialyzed to outpatients and admitted.
Day Hospital, techniques and special t
It is the specialty that deals with the study of the diseases of the kidney at all stages of life. These can be congenital, acquired or traumatic. At present, the specialty has had a big spike due to the technological and scientific advances from the TWENTIETH century. At Hospital Almater, we have the physical infrastructure and next-generation technology for the appropriate study and management of patients with renal diseases, this includes aspects of clinical, surgical, and a department of hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration, as well as a successful kidney transplant programme.
Conditions most common:
Renal failure acute.
Chronic renal failure.
Cysts in the kidneys.
Procedures most common:
Acute haemodialysis: We have Intermittent Haemodialysis and High-Efficiency Haemodiafiltration, unique in the north of the country to provide this last option) and Therapies Slow Continuous (only in the region that has this technology).
Chronic hemodialysis: We have Haemodialysis and High-Efficiency Haemodiafiltration.
Renal biopsy: a Procedure to obtain a sample of the kidney and to know the type of disease that presents the patient. Is done by expert hands, guided by Ultrasound or Ct.
Installation of catheter for Haemodialysis, Acute and Chronic, as well as for Peritoneal Dialysis.
Plasmapheresis: a Procedure to remove antibodies that affect diseases such as Lupus, among other ailments
Liver dialysis: a Treatment to remove toxic substances that accumulate by failure of the liver.
Kidney transplant: Method of renal replacement preferred for Renal Failure Chronic.
The work programme of Haemodialysis and Haemodiafiltration in Hospital Almater arises as a NECESSITY, due to the large increase in the demand for the service at the local level. It is known that about 1% of the world population suffering from kidney disease in any of its stages. Mexico occupies one (some references say the first) of the first places in the world with sick patients of the kidneys and need of renal replacement.
The plan of work to be performed on the Unit of Hemodialysis/Hemodiafiltration of Hospital Almater includes the opening to the economically weaker; that is to say; we are trying to short-to-medium term have a 30% free of the total daily sessions of Hemodialysis. The Unit of Hospital Almater is the only one in the city that counts with Hemodialysis High-Efficiency, in addition to being the only one that gives Haemodiafiltration in the entire North of the Country. The quality of the service may allow the patient to NOT consume drugs and have a free diet.
